Once upon a time there was a lovely garden where the flowers blossomed and trees grew tall. All summer long the bees and butterflies flew from flower to flower, the little animals gathered seeds and nuts, and the birds sang under the warm sun. The fairy folk loved to help the beings of the garden - and to dance and play as well!
Instrumental music….
But the winds blew, days grew colder, and the leaves fell from the trees.
Wind dances with leaves in front of stage…..
Song
Come little leaves said the wind one day,
Come over the meadow with me and play…
Put on your dresses of red and gold for the summer is gone,
And the days grow cold. Grow C…O…L…D grow cold.
The little animals, flowers and fairy folk could not stay upon the earth for winter was coming… They heard a call echoing on the air ~
“ Mother Earth is calling so children you must go, to gather round your mother deep in the earth below…”
(Fairy folk and flowers leave top stage)
Then, one evening Jack Frost came scattering little crystals of ice everywhere.
(Green silks are pulled away revealing white and browns)
Instrumental music…. As Jack Frost dances along
A little elf named Pipkin had been asleep when Mother Earth had called. He awoke and found himself all alone in the twilight of the garden.
“Where is everyone?” He cried. Just then an old gnome came walking along. He was carrying a lantern.
Pipkin asked him, “Where have all my garden friends gone?”
The old gnome replied, “ They have gone down to rest in Mother Earth’s caverns. Soon the cold North Wind will bring ice and snow, but Mother Earth will keep us warm and snug down below.”
Pipkin asked, “ May I come along too?”
“Of course,” the old gnome replied, “ But you will need to kindle a light, hold it tight, and keep it bright to find the path.”
(Old gnome give Pippin a lantern.)
“Here is a lantern for you... inside is a little flame. You must carry it carefully with courage and love in your heart - then you too will brighten the darkness and see the right way to go.”
(Gnome and Pippin exit the stage to instrumental tones - singing bowl sounds as the light of mother earth’s cave rises up)
Mother Earth greeted the travelers and welcomed them to help tuck the little seed children into their beds.
“Here my children, find warmth and rest,
Above blows ice and snow,
I will keep you safe as I know best,
And season’s wisdom turns and grows…
When the Spring Sun comes to call,
I will wake you one and all,
To rise to the light of day once more.”
(Song - as fairy folk tuck in the little seed children)
“Golden light is turning gray,
Mists begin to rule the day,
Bare the trees their branches lift,
Clouds of dead leaves earthward drift.
Deep below, deep below,
New life shall spring, new life shall spring.”
Lights dim, candle is snuffed..
The End
